How am I going to run my business?

Posted on July 9, 2023

I’m not.

Let me tell you a little story: a while ago I was working with a business coach and they picked up on the fact that I always said “I’m running my business”. They said. “Claudia, do you enjoy running?” And I said. “Well, not really, but it’s good for me, I suppose”.

Associating the work of the business with an activity that I feel not positive about is the equivalent of setting myself up for failure!

So, what am I doing instead?

You might guess it if you’ve been following me for a while: I walk my business. Steadily, putting one foot in front of the other, taking in the views. Time for a cuppa and a rest on a bench. Time for chats.

Now, let’s get down to business.

Up to now, Coaching has been my primary stream of income.

In my business as an Executive Life Coach, I help overworked employees create fulfilling careers. I act as a sounding board for decisions, encouraging my clients to look at situations from a variety of angles, offering support and accountability, as well as celebrating successes, along the way.

I have an International clientele (Europe, US, UK), and most of my coaching takes place via zoom or phone calls.

So, what’s changing?

I’m offering people the opportunity to walk and be coached at the same time. You can join me for a day (up to three), on my hiking adventure and sort out your career and life during that time.

Clients can have regular sessions via zoom or a phone call is available as well, as I will have both my phone and my laptop with me. I will thoroughly encourage clients to walk as we talk -even if we’re not walking in the same location.

Why combine coaching and walking?

  • We concentrate better while walking and it also boosts your creativity.
  • The brain is more active and able to create new synopsis more quickly when moving.
  • When walking, it is possible to be in a state of flow. You are in the moment, focusing on what is around you, fully present. You are not jumping between tasks, on phones computers or being interrupted by things to do with your work. You can fully focus.
  • Any disruptions you come across, like traffic, dogs stopping, etc. will help you to understand what’s important and those things will always come back up in the conversation. Those unimportant things, that you may have thought were important, but now realise weren’t, literally fall by the wayside.
  • The link with nature is a huge plus. Shinrin Yoku, is the Japanese tradition of forest bathing; a process of relaxation. There is no actual bathing, but rhetorically it is about absorbing the forest atmosphere.  Walking amongst the trees, and observing nature around you, whilst breathing deeply helps calm the mind and improves the mood.
  • There are many more lessons we can draw from nature too. For example, each plant is different and unique, blooming and developing in their own time. They do not look left and right to compare themselves with what the other plants are doing.
